Elegant Easter Eggs on a Budget: DIY Diamond Gems & Velvet Eggs

This Easter season, why not make your own DIY diamond gems & velvet eggs for a fraction of the cost? Making elegant Easter eggs doesn't have to be expensive. With some supplies from the Dollar Tree, you can create beautiful Faberge' style eggs that will wow your friends and family! This blog post will show you how to make your own luxurious eggs with a few simple steps.
For this project you will need:
- Large and small Styrofoam eggs
- Velvet headbands
- Silver and gold diamond wrap ribbon
- Diamond vase fillers
- Assorted gem stickers
- Wooden skewer
- Tweezers or forceps
- Hot glue gun
1. Gather your materials.

2. Take a velvet headband and cut the velvet material into a long tube.
3. Starting with the smallest egg, stretch the material around the Styrofoam egg until there’s about 1/2” material above the egg.
4. Use a wooden skewer to push one point of the top of the material into the top of the egg. Push the material into the middle hole and go around and around, using your fingers to keep the material flush at the top. Go back around again and make sure there are not too many pleats in the top.
5. Turn it over to the other end and cut the material close, but enough so that it will stretch over into the center of the egg. Like on the previous end, poke the material into the center point of that end of the egg to finish covering.
6. For large eggs, since it will be a tighter fit, roll the material inside-out up over your fingers about the length of the egg and stretch over the top of the egg. Push it down over the egg as far as possible.
7. Pull the material up a little bit more to have enough material to cover to the center. Repeat the same process as with smaller eggs using a skewer to poke the material into the center top and bottom points to cover.
8. You should be able to cover two small eggs plus two large eggs from one headband. With 4 headbands I covered sixteen velvet eggs, eight white and eight burgundy to fill my basket and display on my table.

9. Cut one strand of diamond wrap and put hot glue at the top of the egg. Roll the diamond wrap around the side to the bottom and put a drop of hot glue at the bottom, attach then bring the line back up to the top, glue and cut the strand. Repeat to put a line of diamond wrap in the front and the back.
10. Use gems and diamonds stickers to decorate the egg. You can find a variety of different sizes and shaped at Dollar Tree. for this one I'm using small diamond hearts stickers and boarder jewel stickers. Create a design for the front of the egg using pieces from different sticker packs.
11. Transfer the design to the egg using tweezers or forceps and a tiny drop of hot glue to each piece. You can decorate the top, bottom, front, and back of the eggs.

12. For my diamond-studded egg I’m using diamond vase fillers from Dollar Tree. Start at the top of the Styrofoam egg and work your way around and down using hot glue to glue the diamond bottom point onto the egg. It will take one and one-fourth packs to cover a large egg.

When you’re finished making your velvet and diamond Easter eggs, you can enjoy displaying them in a variety of ways. From a basket full of DIY bling Easter eggs (I also created this Bling Basket using dollar store items! ) to being individually displayed in glass tea candle holders or candle stick holders, the possibilities are endless! You can make this craft project again in 2023 as beautiful ornaments for Christmas for another stylish Dollar Tree DIY or use it as inspiration for other DIY crafts.
